What is an Impact bar?

An impact bar is a special mechanical device that distributes the load of an impact over a wide surface area. The bar is made with a special rectangular design that forces any impacted weight to be distributed of the entire surface area of the bar. These types of bar designs are often used in safety equipment for automobile doors, bumpers, and roll cages. They are also used as weight support for conveyor belts.

The impact bar is a combination of three different layers. The top layer is made of UHMWPE for smooth movement of belt, thanks to its low dynamic co-efficient of friction. The middle layer is of rubber to cushion the impact load while the lower layer is made of aluminum, which acts as a fastening device with the main support frame or cradle. The cradlers are custom built to suit specific applications. The installation of impact bar is made is such a way that the belt is not in touch with the bar when running empty. The belt comes in contact with the bar only when it is running under loaded condition.

Conveyor belts use impact bars under the belted surface area. This impact bar design helps distribute the load of packages and heavy material that is rolled over the conveyor belt area. These are used on assembly lines lines, in mail package facilities, and with people mover systems in large buildings or airports.

Most airports have luggage belts that transport heavy luggage from the airplanes to the baggage claim areas. These belts have impact bars under the belt area to help support the load of the luggage. Using this type of design is cost effective because it can carry large loads with less material.

The impact bar is available in many lengths and sizes. These bars are rectangular in shape and include a small cut-out area in the center of the material, which is also in the shape of a rectangle. This design makes the material more durable and lighter than solid metal because the rectangle causes the load to be distributed throughout the surface area.

What is UHMWPE

UHMW-PE is defined as polyethylene whose molecular weight is 3.1 million or higher. When making this determination, it was found that physical properties increased rapidly as lower MW values increased, and then leveled off at the 3,100,000 value. As with most high-performance polymers, the processing of UHMW-PE is not easy. Because of its high melt viscosity, conventional molding and extrusion processes would break the long molecular chains that give the material its excellent properties. Current manufacturing methods include compression molding, ram extrusion and the warm forging of extruded slugs. UHMW-PE has the outstanding abrasion resistance and an extremely low coefficient of friction. Impact strength is high and chemical resistance is excellent.

The material does not break in impact strength tests using standard notched specimens; double-notched specimens break at 20 ft-lb/in (42.1 kJ/m2). UHMW-PE has a crystalline melting point of 267°F (131°C). The recommended maximum service is about 200°F (93°C).
 Care should be taken when fastening UHMW-PE, as its large thermal expansion can cause the material to buckle between fasteners if they are too far apart.
UHMW (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) is an extremely tough plastic with high abrasion and wear resistance.
The versatility of polyethylene has made it a popular plastic for countless industrial applications that require durability, low friction, and chemical resistance.
